Autumn Masters (and Seniors) Competition

This autumn is going to be busy for our masters swimmer with several important competitions coming up.

Firstly, the inaugural LASA Masters and Senior Championships are to be held on the 24th of September.  This is a brilliant opportunity for anyone age 18 and over to have a go at swimming at a county event without having to travel outside of the county.  Even better –  there are no entry times, but there are prizes for placings in each ten year age group above 25 (and 18 to 25 years too).  The closing date for this is coming up really soon on the 7th of September.  Please let me know if you enter so that I can organise and enter the club relay teams.  Entry packs are here.  We really need to support this new event on our doorstep so that it runs again in future.

Secondly, entries are now open for the Swim England National Masters championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.  This meet is over Friday 27th to Sunday 20th of October.  Details and entry packs are here.

Thirdly, the next round of the county masters challenge is coming up at Rugby on November the 12th.


Open Water Training Session – Wednesday 16th August at Mallory Park.

The weather is looking good for the next couple of days so I will be running an open water coached session at Mallory Park on Wednesday evening. If you would like to take part, you must be able to swim 600m comfortably without stopping.
This costs £5 and you will need to be changed and ready to swim at 6:15pm. The session will be for 30 minutes, but you may continue to swim afterwards. Wetsuits are optional and can be hired from Speedhub at the lake for £5 but for smaller sizes you may want to contact them in advance: Each swimmer will need to complete this disclaimer if they haven’t swum there before this season:…/efe1e9_39386dd9548f4c278260b6f…

Please be aware that this is a public session so there will be non-club members using the lake and changing rooms. The changing facilities are approx. 200m from the lake entry point so bring warm clothing to walk to the changing rooms and to go home in too.

Sessions Cancelled: Monday 24th July 2017 DMU 5:30pm & 7:00pm

The following sessions are cancelled on Monday 24th July:  DMU 5:00pm and DMU 7:00pm.

5.30pm swimmers may swim at Cossington Street at 6.00pm with Sachin. 7.00pm swimmers may swim on Tuesday 25th with Sachin and John instead (or a similar junior session on another night – but please check with the coach first).

Please note that the sessions at Evington Pool and the DMU sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday are unaffected and will continue as usual.



Session Cancelled: DMU 5.30pm-7.00pm, 26th June 2017

On the 26th of June, the 5.30pm session at DMU with Chris will be cancelled.  Swimmers may on this occasion swim instead at Cossington Street at 6.00pm with Sachin or at DMU at 7.00pm with myself.  Sorry for the inconvenience.  No other sessions are affected.


Open Water Training 3rd September 2016 9.00am

The weather forecast is good so open water training will be on Saturday morning this week.  The temperature last night was 19C and although it looks like it might be rainy the water will be warm enough to comfortably swim without a wetsuit.

2016-08-31 18.31.05Training will again take place at Mallory Park Race Circuit, Kirkby Mallory, LE9 7QE where lake swimming is run by Cycling Mallory Park.  Map and safety information here:  The cost to is £5, payable at the time to Cycling Mallory.  They have a small number of wetsuits to hire if you contact them directly for anyone who can’t face swimming without!

When you arrive at Mallory park, drive through until, you get to a car park.  Ahead are some open gates with a florescent sign saying open water swimming – go through this gate and drive clockwise along the road alongside the track until you get to the footbridge over the race track.  Park here and walk over the footbridge then continue walking straight ahead to the desk by the entry slipway to the lake.

Please read the safety information before you arrive and all swimmers will need to fill in the safety form – this will need to be signed by parents for anyone under the age of 18 and you will not be allowed to swim without it!

You will need to bring:

  • Swimwear (already on to save time!), goggles and a bright coloured hat (I have spares if you only have a silver one).
  • Warm clothes to wear once you have got changed.
  • Something warm to wear to walk from the lake to the changing rooms, (eg a fleece or cagoule).

You may also like to bring:

  • Flip-flops
  • Wetsuit
  • A warm drink.
Training will take place during a public swimming session, so there will be other people using the lake and changing rooms.  As it is a public session, parents are welcome to swim too and I am happy to help anyone new to open water with acclimatisation.  At the same time there is cycling on the track too for £5.
Safety reminder:
Shower as soon as possible after leaving the water.  Wash all equipment that has been near the water – including drink bottles.  If you feel ill in the the two weeks after open water swimming, please see a doctor and advise them that you have been swimming in open water.
